Super Bowl poster winners announced
By Chris Rosa
Sometimes less is more.
In the Abbeville Meridional’s first-ever “Super Saints, Super Bowl Poster Contest” it would be the case when it came to selecting a winner.
The Meridional received just over 30 posters from fans as young as four years old. The posters can be picked up next week during business hours.
Abbeville firemen and employees from the Abbeville library, as well as, Meridional employees voted on the posters.
Because of the amount of posters turned in by children (ages 4 to 14 years old), the Meridional created a children’s category and an adult category.
On Friday, the Meridional selected the winner of the adult division, who is Josette Duhon McNett of Kaplan.
She wins $100 gift certificate from two grocery stores in the parish. She wins a $50 certificate from Champagne’s in Erath and $50 from Robies in Abbeville.
Her poster is of a fluer-de-lis in the middle of a white poster . Surrounding the fluer-de-lis fire moving feathers that are golden in color.
Below the fluer-de-lis are a football and helmet.
McNett said she loves to paint and has been doing it since she was young.
Taking home second place in the adult division is Kim Bui. She wins a $25 gift certificate from Champagne’s and $25 from Robies.
Her poster is of two clashing helmets that are two dimensional with the words “Saints” on top and “Colts” at the bottom.
Colts, in her words, stands for “Count On Losing To The Saints.”
The winners of the youth division are two talented artists named Gracie and Julie Babineaux, Gracie, 11 and Julie, 9, are students at Meaux Elementary. Both sisters are in the “Gifted and Talented Program” at the school. They are avid Cajun musicians. Gracie plays the fiddle and Julie plays the guitar.
Because of their Cajun music background is where they got the saying, “Kee-Yaw. Look at Dem Saints.”
Their poster is similar to the winning adult poster. It also has a fluer-de-lis in the middle with the saying on top and bottom.
They painted the poster in black and gold colors.
Honorable mentions in the youth division went to the poster created by 11-year-old Noah Vincent and eight-year-old Isaac Luquette, along with the poster created by 5-year-old Avery Toups. Both posters had “Who Dat” written on them.
The adult honorable mentions went to Jean Schexnider (God Bless Our Saints) and the poster created by Maria Meaux (Who Dat Bree’s 2 Da SuperBowl).
