Two juveniles arrested for damaging property in Maurice
Two male juvenile subjects from Vermilion Parish have been arrested for eight counts of Criminal Damage to Property following incidents which took place within the Maurice city limits and the surrounding areas on the night Feb. 25.
The names were not released because they are juveniles.
Sheriff Mike Couvillon says that information was obtained by Maurice Police Department. from an anonymous source indicating who the possible suspects may be.
Sheriff looks into livestock complaint
Sheriff Mike Couvillon said a complaint was received by the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office in reference to possible neglect of livestock in the Mouton Cove area in Southern Vermilion Parish.
Sheriff Couvillon says Andrew Granger with the LSU Ag Center Extension Service was called to evaluate the cattle, and his opinion was that necessary steps needed to be taken to move the cattle to an alternate location, be wormed, and monitored.
First homicide in 2009
Abbeville man gunned down in vehicle Sunday
An Abbeville man died of a fatal gunshot wound early Sunday morning; Abbeville Police reported this is the first homicide in the city since October 2007.
Abbeville Police Chief Rick Coleman said officers responded to a “shots fired” call Sunday at 6:14 a.m., just three minutes after police received the call. He said officers arrived at a Vernon Street address, but found no one.
Abbeville native enjoys being on big screen

Not every day you get to see yourself on the big screen, but for one Abbeville native, he can say he has done it three times while living in Cajun Country.
Steve Broussard, 58, was first seen in the local movie “Belizaire, The Cajun” in 1985. It was filmed at Acadian Village in Lafayette. He had small parts where he spoke French.
Broussard, a 1969 Abbeville High graduate, caught the acting fever after Belizaire and hired an agent and joined the Actor’s Guild.
Grant money available to lift homes

Andrew Granger is a homeowner who owns a brick home south of Abbeville, and it got flooded twice over a three-year period because of storm surges from two hurricanes.
He attended the first-ever Vermilion Parish Community Expo in search of answers as to where to get extra money to lift his home.
Race against time to save old Maurice building

MAURICE - The Maurice Historical Preservation Society is racing against the clock to save the old Jean Maurice Villien Mercantile Store from being demolished.
The store was built in the 1840s by the founder of Maurice, Maurice Villien, and the Preservation Society now has less than 90 days to find $15,000 to move the building; otherwise, it will be torn down.
