Parent may be jailed if child misses school

Parents should read their new school handbook this week when their child brings it home because it could mean the difference between a parent going to jail or not.
One of the biggest changes in the handbook deals with the amount of days a student is allowed to miss without an excuse and how many times a student can be tardy in a semester.
Several from parish appointed to French Council
Five people from Vermilion Parish are part of the 50 gubernatorial appointments to the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana.
Re-appointments include Warren Perrin of Lafayette who is instrumental in creating the Acadian Museum in Erath. Perrin will serve as chair for CODOFIL.
New members include J.C. Aube of Abbeville. Aube is the Grand Knight with the Knights of Columbus Hall and can trace his French heritage through multiple generations.
Open arms and borders in Delcambre

DELCAMBRE - Over the past couple of months, I’ve had the opportunity to visit many of the towns and communities of the area. I’ve learned that each possesses an unusual quality which contributes to the wonderful and eclectic vibe of Vermilion Parish. This week, my mother and I headed to the community of Delcambre, whose friendliness and uniqueness overflow the borders into another parish.
Coastal Chemical turns 50

Coastal Chemical Company celebrated its 50th Golden Anniversary this past week by throwing a party behind the main office on La. 14 in Abbeville.
What began as a two-person operation out of Revis Sirmon’s house in 1958 is now a $600 million, 500 employee company.
It’s one of the largest chemical companies that supplies production wells in the country.
The man who started the company is Abbeville’s own Revis Sermon, who was on hand at the anniversary party Wednesday.
AHS students earn college biology credits

Five Vermilion Parish students will not have to take freshman biology their first semester because they passed a year-long advanced placement biology class taught at Abbeville High School this past school year.
The biology class, which was two hours long, five days a week, was a college course taught by Abbeville High science teacher Christina Menard.
At the end of the school year, students took a college level test. The test was graded by college professors. The students were given a grade between a five (the best) to a one (failed).
Christian Service Center to hold fun day

The Christian Service Center will have a family fun day Saturday to help the children get ready for school.
The fun day begins at 9 a.m. and lasts until 3 p.m. at the Christian Service Center located at 701 Chevis Street in Abbeville.
“We want to give the kids something fun to do right before school starts,” said Darla Castille, the director of the Christian Service Center.
Volunteers and workers from Christian Service Center will be on hand to help.
There will be a $5 all-day charge for the water slide.
