Abbeville’s run comes to an end

All great things must come to an end, and Abbeville’s run at the Cal Ripken Jr. World Series came to an end on Sunday night. Abbeville did not go down without a fight, though.
Bryant, Ark. looked to be the team that was going to come out on fire, but Abbeville starting pitcher Jacob Sagrera pulled his team out of a bases loaded jam with only one out.
That spark led the way to a huge bottom half of the inning for Abbeville. Jacob Sagrera would be the first Abbeville runner to score in the first inning. He reached on base due to a fielder’s choice, which resulted in Emile Trahan being thrown out at the plate. With two outs, the following four Abbeville batters, Layne Faulk, Trace Lemaire, Bryson Suire, and Payton Theriot, all reached base by being walked. Sagrera and Faulk trotted around the bases to eventually be walked in to score the first two runs of the game. Back-to-back singles by Nic Fletcher and Bren Faulk allowed Suire and Theriot to score the third and fourth runs of the inning.
Bryant then was looking at an uphill battle to get back into the game. Bryant picked up one run on three hits in the third inning, and two more runs in the top of fourth on three hits to bring the game within one run.
Bryant entered the top of the sixth three outs away from elimination. Zach Jackson led off with a walk. He would score the tying run on an RBI single by Connor Alliston.
With the game tied at 4 going into extra innings, Bryant put up two runs on its first extra inning at bat to take a 6-4 lead.
Abbeville found itself three outs away from elimination. Alex Courtier and Jacob Sagrera got Abbeville going in the right direction as they led off the seventh with two singles. Courtier scored, but Sagrera was stranded on second base to end the game by the final score of 6-5.
“I know that these kids have it in their heart that they want to be out here playing baseball,” said Abbeville head coach Byron Dozier on the fight his team put up in the last inning. “Everybody saw that they were going to fight back no matter what.”
Bren Faulk was named the player of the game for Abbeville, while Jordan Gentry was named player of the game for Bryant.
The winning pitcher for Bryant was Luke Brantley.
“I couldn’t have asked for anything more,” said Dozier on the play of his team. “They came out and played with great focus and were on fire early.”
