Wildcats offer different looks at Mamou

There is one name Abbeville head coach Ward Courville used to describe his team’s scrimmage against Mamou Thursday night -- Clint Eastwood.
“It was the Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” said Courville, referencing Eastwood’s famous western. “We did some good things, we did some bad things and then we just did some ugly things.”
Courville said he was pleased with the way his team moved the ball on offense.
“When we made our blocks,” said Courville, “we looked good and moved the ball.
“We ran the ball well, even though we don’t have a true tailback;and our receivers made some spectacular catches.”
Another positive area, a area that plagued the Wildcats in recent memory, was the kicking game.
“I was pleased with our kicking game,” said Courville. “Garrett Legé kicked two extra points and kicked the ball inside the 15 (yard line) twice.”
Some of what Courville called the bad was missed assignments on offense and over pursuing on defense.
“We were aggressive on defense,” said Courville, “and I like that, but we did over pursue at times. We need to work on play action and things like that.
“I think we will get there.”
Courville said the “ugly” came with mental lapses on both sides of the ball.
“There were some things,” said Courville that did just not look good.
“But I was happy with some of what I saw. There are some other areas we need to work on to get better.”
The Wildcats will look to make those improvements Friday when they play host to the Vermilion/Acadia Parish Jamboree. The Wildcats will face Crowey after North Vermilion faces Rayne at 6:30 p.m.
