Topham happy with Eagles’ scrimmage

Vermilion Catholic head coach Brad Topham has never shied away from having his team challenged -- whether is in the scrimmage, jamboree or early in the regular season.
Often that challenge means facing a much larger opponent. Such was the case Thursday as the Eagles took their home field for the first time in 2008 when they scrimmaged Rayne.
“They went 9-1 last year,” said Topham. “I think they look like a better football team this year.
“Let me put it this way, that is a first- round home game 3A school.”
In other words, the Eagles faced top-notch talent. It is the same kind of talent VC faced in the scrimmage last season against Rayne.
“Comparatively speaking,” said Topham, “I don’t think we got one or two plays where we gained more than two yards in 30 plays against them last year. Thursday we had some good plays and our basic stuff worked.
“I like what we have on offense.
Topham said the Eagles need to work on getting their young tailbacks some more experience. He said he wanted to work on the spread offense, too. But overall, Topham was pleased.
“It was good,” said Topham. “We were challenged and it’s great for us.”
The Eagles will take on Class 4A Teurlings Catholic Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will be part of the Kiwanis Club Jamboree at Cajun Field in Lafayette.
