The Vermilion Parish Library at the Abbeville Branch held a “Think Positive” hip-hop dance show for the community, featuring the group Rhythm/Sol on Wednesday.
The group consists of two dancers, Terrance Martin and Tyler Wilson. Both from Louisiana, Martin, 32, has been dancing for 11 years, and Wilson, 27, has been dancing for six years.
“I dance because it’s a part of my life,” Martin explained. “I just look at it as just learn different things, new challenge. Just to get better–better myself. It’s just a challenge to keep moving on and just keep educating myself and educating people in the right way.”
The group specializes in a dance form called b-boying. Sometimes called break dancing, b-boying is a street-form of hip-hop dancing.
Although Rhythm/Sol specializes in b-boying, both men have also delved into other types of dance.
“I’ve been dancing for six years in styles such as funk, b-boy, hip-hop and house,” Wilson said. “I also took a little bit of Latin dancing.”
Partnered with the Young Audiences’ New Orleans Chapter, Rhythm/Sol has been performing for about three years, Martin said.
In addition to traveling and performing with Young Audiences, Martin and Wallace have also tried out for the televised dance competition So You Think You Can Dance? featured on FOX.
“It’s a real good show. I think it’s awesome just to put dance out there, and Nigel (Lythgoe) is really how he is in person just like you see him on TV,” Martin said.
Both have been featured in the sixth season in Atlanta, Ga. They also tried out for the competition in season four in Dallas, Texas and season five.
Other shows Martin and Wilson have competed in include America’s Got Talent and America’s Best Dance Crew.
Martin is also appearing in an upcoming film, Spring Break ‘83, starring Jamie Kennedy, John Goodman and Erik Estrada.
When Wilson wasn’t dancing, he received his technical diploma in computer engineering from South Louisiana Community College. He also said he plans to attend the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for fashion design.
“I dance because it feels good,” Wilson said. “I like to spread the knowledge that I learn, and it’s great exercise.”
