Lady Pirates fall to Green Devils in playoffs

The Kaplan Lady Pirates basketball season came to an end with a 44-33 road-loss to the Plaquemine Green Devils in the first round of the Division III Non-Select playoffs Thursday night.
While no one expected the Lady Pirates to be in the playoffs when the season started, Kaplan head coach Tina Roy felt she had the better team and should have won the game.
“I don’t think we were ready to play,” said Roy. “I feel like we were the better team, but we played to their level.”

Two parish boy's teams make basketball playoffs

The LHSAA released the boy’s playoff brackets Monday afternoon, and two parish teams are in.
Under first-year head coach John Thompson, Vermilion Catholic is No. 9 and will play a first-round home game this week.
The Eagles (15-6) will play Central Private (10-19), the No. 24th seed, on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
Thompson, a VC graduate, is excited to be in the playoffs.
“I’m very excited and proud of our kids for buying into a first-year head coach’s beliefs and philosophy,” Thompson said. “I had certain expectations for this year, and we accomplished quite a few.

Sisterly Love on Lady Patriot basketball team

LEROY - It’s always special when sisters who are close in age go to high school together and get to play on the same basketball team. What makes the North Vermilion Lady Patriots unique is they have two sets of sisters living that dream.
Lilly and Ava Denais are 20 months apart. Lilly is 18 and the lone senior on the Lady Pats’ squad. Ava is 16 and a junior.
Taylor and MaKenzie Marceaux are 16 months apart. Taylor is a 17-year-old junior. MaKenzie is 15 and a sophomore. She turns 16 in April.

Kaplan High begins search for new head football coach

KAPLAN — The search for a new head football coach at Kaplan High School is underway because head football coach Cory Brodie stepped down as the head football coach ealier this week.
On Tuesday, the PE/coaching position became open at Kaplan High School.
Superintendent Tommy Byler confirmed there is a job opening.
It will be open next week, and by the start of the 2024, interviews will take place, and a new football coach is expected to be named.

Riverside knocks VC out of playoffs

The Vermilion Catholic Eagles will not be returning to the Superdome for a second year.
The No. 5 ranked Riverside Academy Rebels knocked the Eagles out of the Select Division IV playoffs with a 34-7 win in wet conditions.
The game was paused for a 90-minute lighting/rain delay with 1:04 remaining in the first half and the Rebels leading 21-7.
VC’s only touchdown came with 5:15 left in the first half when safety Ross Dartez intercepted a pass and ran it back 60 yards.
