Abbeville fire department collecting list of names for free smoke detectors

Having working smoke detectors in a home can be invaluable.
While supplies are available, Abbeville residents can have two smoke detectors installed at no charge.
Through a program with the Louisiana Office of the State Fire Marshal, the Abbeville Fire Department is taking requests for smoke detectors.
“We’ve done multiple rounds of this,” Abbeville Fire Chief Jude Mire said.
Anyone interested in the service can call 337-898-4277. The detectors will be installed and distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
“We will take all the information,” Mire said. “When we can, we will call to set up a time. Then, our guys will go install the detectors.”
Mire said the program had received a tremendous response from the community.
“We’ve done about 150 so far,” Mire said. “This round has about 70.”
Funds are distributed through the state, so its costing neither the city nor the citizen to have the detectors installed.
“It’s not costing the people anything,” Mire said. “This is money from a grant.”
Each residence will receive two smoke detectors.
“We try to put one by the bedroom and one closer to the kitchen,” Mire said.
Mire stressed that this is a tremendous program.
“Hopefully, it can save people’s lives,” Mire said.
