Vermilion Parish middle, high schools to remain hybrid until Feb. 1

Vermilion Parish middle schools and high schools had planned to welcome all students back on Jan. 19.
Plans have changed.
Those students will instead remain on a hybrid schedule until Monday, Feb. 1. Vermilion Parish Superintendent Tommy Byler said Wednesday afternoon that the current number of COVID-19 cases in the parish prompted the decision.
“Unfortunately, the number of cases and quaranitines in our schools have not yet begun to decline,” Byler said. “Because of this, we will remain Hybrid for middle and high school students until Feb. 1.”

LANDRY TAKES OATH AS 15TH JDC DISTRICT ATTORNEY

LAFAYETTE — A new attorney is now on the job in the fifteenth judicial district.
Lafayette, Acadia, and Vermilion parishes swore in District Attorney Donald “Don” Landry Monday night. He started his first day in office this week before officially being sworn in.
Landry is familiar with the position. He worked for 34 years under former District Attorney Mike Harson before he lost reelection in 2014.

I-10 EASTBOUND CLOSED: FIery TWO-VEHICLE I-10 CRASH IN RAYNE TAKES ONE LIFE

RAYNE - Rayne Police Chief Carroll J. Stelly announced his department is currently investigating a two-vehicle crash that resulted in one fatality.
At 6:46 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13, Rayne Police received a call of a crash and a vehicle on fire on I-10 Eastbound near the on ramp of Rayne Exit 87. Rayne Police and Rayne Volunteer Fire responded and the fire was extinguished.

Louisiana Gov. Edwards keeping current COVID-19 restrictions in place without changes

(The Center Square) – Louisiana will stay in “Phase 2” of the White House-approved restrictions meant to limit the spread of COVID-19, Gov. John Bel Edwards said Tuesday.
The number of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations is increasing in every region of the state, officials report. The rate of COVID-19 tests coming back positive is well above 10 percent statewide; officials would prefer to see a rate below 5 percent.

Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office searching for suspect in four-wheeler theft

The Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division is actively attempting to identify and locate a suspect involved in the theft of two four-wheelers.
The suspect is described as a white heavy set male, approximately six foot tall.
On Jan. 8, 2021, between the hours of 2 a.m. and 2:20 a.m., the suspect entered into a metal building near the intersection of LA Hwy. 699 and LA Hwy. 700, and stole two (2) four wheelers . The four wheelers are described as a 2003 Honda 500, Green in color and a 2009 Honda 420 (VIN: 1HTE370294006478).
