Aldermen vote to deny raise for Maurice Chief

MAURICE — Citing an uncertainty with the current financial situation, members of the Village of Maurice Board of Aldermen denied Chief of Police Warren Rost’s request for a two-percent pay raise.
The board’s 3-0 vote came after a public hearing during Wednesday evening’s monthly board meeting. No one from the public commented on the issue.
Rost made the request in June for the two-percent increase, which would amount to a little more than $700 per year. The board tabled the issue in July.
The board did grant Rost a similar request made in July of 2016.

School Board member Kibbie Pillette made the motion to use $500,000 to try and lower health insurance premiums and the other $500,000 to be put into the general fund account. It was approved 4-3. In the back ground is board member Sara Duplechain.

Budget approved by Vermilion Parish School Board

Good news to those who work for the Vermilion Parish School Board - a balanced budget got approved 4-3 Wednesday night at the school board meeting.
The budget had to be approved by the middle of September.
The hold up to approving a balanced budget was how to get it balanced. A couple of months into the new budget year, and already the budget was predicted to be $2 million short.

Two Vermilion Parish organizations submit resolutions stating their concerns over actions of parish school board

School Board members learned at Wednesday’s special meeting that two parish organizations wanted to state their views on the Vermilion Parish School Board.
The American Legion 29 and the Vermilion Parish Chamber of Commerce each submitted their own resolution which stated their thoughts about the Vermilion Parish School Board.
John Thompson, who is the commander of American Legion Post 29, read the resolutions to the school board members. Each were also given a copy.
Each resolution is at least four pages long. Here are some excerpts of each resolution.

THE 67 TH DELCAMBRE SHRIMP FESTIVAL BEGINS WEDNESDAY NIGHT

DELCAMBRE — Since 1950, the Delcambre Shrimp Festival has hooked visitors with good food, cold drinks and fais-do-do music.
Scheduled from Aug. 16 to Aug. 20, the festival marks the beginning of shrimping season.
An estimated 20,000 people attend the festival, said Tracey Trim, president of the Delcambre Shrimp Festival Association. The festival is handicap accessible.
“It’s very good for Delcambre because it brings a lot of tourists into the town. It gets people to see what Delcambre is really about. It’s great for the economy,” he said.
