Barbara was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, and spent her early years there before later residing in Abbeville, and Albany, Louisiana, and ultimately making her home in Lafayette. A proud graduate of Wichita Falls Senior High School, she answered a calling to care for others by pursuing nursing at Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans, beginning a distinguished healthcare career that spanned more than forty years working at several hospitals, including Abbeville General Hospital, Lafayette General Hospital, University Medical Center, and Women's & Children's Hospital.
Throughout her life, Barbara combined professional excellence with a deep commitment to service. As a registered nurse, she played an instrumental role in establishing the Gastroenterology Laboratory at Lafayette General Medical Center and later helped establish hospice services in Bowie, Texas, extending compassionate care to countless patients and families. She also helped establish the Phillip Russo Family and Friends Endowed Scholarship at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, reflecting her belief in the importance of education and opportunity for future generations.
A woman of deep faith, Barbara was a devoted parishioner of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Lafayette and a respected, well-loved member of St. Margaret, Queen of Scotland Catholic Church in Albany. There, she faithfully participated in parish ministries and generously brought Holy Communion to the sick and homebound. One of her greatest personal achievements was becoming a Third Order Carmelite, a spiritual goal she proudly attained in her seventies.
Barbara embraced life with creativity, compassion, and enthusiasm. She found joy in crocheting, painting, playing the piano, and expressing her artistic talents through a variety of crafts. An avid bridge player, she treasured the friendships and fellowship the game provided. Her love for animals was evident through her volunteer work at local animal shelters, where she devoted her time and care to helping abandoned and neglected pets find loving homes.
