LJ “Jay” Joseph Toups
DELCAMBRE – A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted for L.J “Jay” Joseph Toups, age 93, at 3:00 pm on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. Fr. Buddy Breaux will officiate. Interment will follow at the church mausoleum.
A gathering of family and friends will take place at the church on Thursday from 1:00 pm until the service time. A rosary will be prayed at 2:30 pm.
A native of Delcambre, Mr. Toups passed away on Sunday January 2, 2022 at Maison Teche Nursing Home in Jeanerette.
LJ, better known as “Jay”, was a kind and easygoing man who enjoyed the simple things in life. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, camping, and carpentry work. Jay could often be found at Hebert’s Landing (which he ran for several years) or running off to go check the lines he set. Jay and MOMIE could always be found at the camp at Hebert’s Landing and enjoyed having all their kids and grandkids spend time there. Jay liked to brag about all the fish he would catch! He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all and will be truly and deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 75 years, Lula Sonnier Toups (better known as MOMIE by him) children, Michael Toups, Eddie Toups (Elizabeth “Liz”), Jace Toups (Nita) Virgie Landry (Clayton), and Mona Landry (Allen); fifteen grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; and numerous great great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Cestia Toups and Elodie Boudreaux Toups; siblings, Edma David, Inez Landry, Esther Duhon, Telcie Lopez, Rita Dubois, Renes “Beb” Toups, and Dennis Toups; daughter-in-law, Diane B. Toups; and grandson, Brian Landry.
Pallbearers will be Stanley Smith, Randy Landry, Eddie Toups, Jace Toups, Michael Toups, and Wayne Toups.
Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Landry, Allen Landry, Clayton Landry, Jason Dauzat, Dustin Theall, and Casey Romero.
