Loreauville too much for Erath

ERATH – Erath’s Lynkon Romero to David Richard pass-catch scoring combination clicked twice Friday night in the Bobcats’ regular-season opener against Loreauville.
It wasn’t enough to offset the Tigers’ twin brothers – seniors Caleb Jacob and Collin Jacob – and a supporting cast of returning players coming off a reasonably deep postseason run a year ago in Class AA. Loreauville scored on its first three possessions in the first quarter and never looked back on the way to a 41-15 victory over the ’Cats.
Romero, a sophomore, connected with Richard, a senior, in the second and fourth quarters on touchdown passes of 22 and 39 yards, respectively, for a bright spot for Bobcat fans and head coach Eric LeBlanc. Romero finished 11 for 16 for 165 yards and two TDs.
“He’s got the tools to be a good one. Unfortunately, I think he had a couple of mistakes, some young quarterback mistakes,” LeBlanc said.
Romero was intercepted once on the first play of the second half with the Bobcats at the EHS 35. The Tigers capitalized on the host’s third turnover and marched 38 yards in five plays to score on a 3-yard burst over left guard by Ethan Simon to make it 41-8, Loreauville.
LeBlanc lamented turnovers and 105 yards in penalties assessed the Bobcats, who were flagged for seven holding penalties, four in the second half. The flags were the result of undisciplined play, he said.
The holds can be attributed to coming off the ball on the first step, as well as ballcarriers, hitting the wrong holes.
Nevertheless, LeBlanc said, “I see some promise. Our job as a (coaching) staff is to get the guys right and ready for Week II.”
Caleb Jacob, the Tigers’ signal-caller, led all rushers with 153 yards on eight carries. He had long runs of 43 and 47 yards in the first quarter when he scored on the 43-yarder at 9:29 and on a 6-yard sprint at the 5:53 mark. The senior’s 61-yard gallop highlighted the second scoring drive from the LHS 25 to the EHS 14.
The dynamic quarterback also completed 4 of 9 passes for 96 yards and one TD, a 29-yarder to his brother that upped the visitor’s lead to 28-8 at 4:49 in the second quarter.
“I think 5 (Caleb Jacob) is a helluva player and they had a helluva game plan. That’s a good team. They’re two helluva players,” LeBlanc said about the Jacob twins.
He wishes his team would have played more disciplined on each side of the ball.
“We played undisciplined tonight, just going from first steps to reads and (linebacker and/or safety) fits,” he said. “They beat us in the run game, and we try to take pride in stopped the run defensively. Stop the run and you can do a lot of things.”
Loreauville’s other touchdowns came on a 4-yard run by Ethan Simon in the second quarter and Collin Jacob’s fumble recovery in the end zone after a 9-yard completion from his brother to Ethan Simon with 3:41 left in the first half. That score increased the Tigers’ lead to 34-8.
Erath, whose leading grounder was Landon Toups with 41 yards, returns to action next week at DeQuincy.

Vermilion Catholic starts off well against CHS, but can’t sustain it

Vermilion Catholic had the best start possible against Catholic High Friday night.
On the Panthers’ first possession of the game, Vermilion Catholic blocked a punt, and Travin Moore recovered it in the endzone for a touchdown and a quick 6-0 lead.
Even the missed extra-point after wasn’t too much of a letdown for the Eagles against the Panthers.
“Great job by our kids coming out on fire and making a big play early and getting that touchdown for us,” VC coach Broc Prejean said.
It was so big that Catholic High coach Scott Wattigny could feel it on the other sideline.
“You could just sense the momentum draining from our side and going to their side,” the Catholic High coach said. “That was a huge play for them.”
But something strange happened after that.
Despite the first big play going against them, Catholic High regrouped and came back right at VC while the Eagles seemed not to be able to take advantage of their good fortune to open the game.
The Panthers’ offense started clicking, and the Eagles’ offense never could get going and the result was Catholic High coming away with a 21-6 win to open the season as VC fell to 0-1.
The VC offense, which lit up scoreboards last season, was held to 12 yards rushing and only 38 yards passing in the game.
“A lot of that had to do with Catholic High,” Prejean said. “They had a good game plan, and they have some tough kids.
“We kept our defense on the field too much. As a result, we couldn’t move the chains on offense. But that’s stuff we have to work on. We know that it’s a work in progress.”
Marco Austin did most of the damage for Catholic High as the senior running back rushed for 169 yards on 24 carries and senior K.K. Reno scored all three touchdowns for the Panthers (1-0).
VC’s offense, on the other hand, couldn’t get going.
Quarterback Jonathan Dartez completed only 5-of-24 passes and rushed for 10 yards. Andre´ Poirrier rushed 10 times for 5 yards, and Chris LeMeunier had two catches for 39 yards.
But the Eagles’ only ran 46 offensive plays and held the ball for only 16 minutes in the game.
By contrast, Catholic High ran 68 plays and had the ball for more than 30 minutes.
“There are plays out there to be made, and that’s what we told the kids,” Prejean said. “The film is going to be a lot better than the field is. We need to make those plays.”
The Eagles almost made another great play just before halftime.
Vermilion Catholic blocked a Catholic High field goal, and the ball was picked up by Jake Lege, who took it downfield but was tackled at the two-yard line, just missing on another special teams touchdown on the night.
Prejean said he told the kids to put it behind them and get ready for Opelousas Catholic next week.
“That’s all there is to it,” the VC coach said. “Teams around here are going to see this and smell a little bit of blood in the water, and we have to respect that and understand that, and we have to look inward and make ourselves better.”
Prejean did have praise for two defensive linemen who played hard all game against the CHS rushing attack.
“They wore us down,” Prejean said. “Hats off to our two big boys (Will Allen and Zaine Campbell) for stepping up and playing the entire game essentially.
“I was real pleased with that. They will only get bigger and stronger as the season goes.”

Abbeville runs over St. Mary’s

NACHITOCHES - The Abbeville Wildcats travelled three hours and got the win it wanted on Friday. The Wildcats wore down the St. Mary’s Tigers.
The Wildcats led 21-17 at halftime and went on to win 43-23.
The Wildcats rushed for 361 yards on 37 carries.
Running back Blake Saddler led all rushers with eight carries for 170 yards. Saddler also had a school-record 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Quaterback Jaysen Shelvin, running out of the Veer, had 10 carries for 115 yards. Shelvin and Saddler had each two touchdowns.
“This is win means we are keeping the course,” said AHS head coach Roderick Moy. “We are 1-0 and that is where we want to be.”
While the score looks like a blowout, St. Mary’s stayed in the game in the first half. The Class 1A school gave Abbeville, a Class 3A school, all it could handle.
Moy said that was because of Abbeville’s mistakes.
“We had four mental breakdown” Moy added. “We could have won a lot bigger had we not had those breakdowns.”
The Wildcats fumbled four times and lost three of those four fumbles.
St. Mary’s did have success throwing the football, by throwing for 156 yards.
Abbeville completed only one pass for eight yards.
The Wildcats are home Friday to battle Central Catholic of Morgan City.

Abbeville’s Tahj Judge and the Wildcats open the season tonight on the road.

Playing in Turpin Stadium

Wildcats travel to Natchitoches to battle St. Mary’s on Northwestern’s campus

Today, the Abbeville Wildcats are traveling north to play a team maybe for the first time in the school’s history. The Wildcats are opening the season to battle St. Mary’s Tigers, a Class 1A school located in Nachitoches.
How and why did this arrangement take place between the two coaches?
AHS head coach Roderick Moy has a simple answer to those two questions.
He wants his team to get a chance to play in a college football stadium, in hopes college coaches will be in attendance.
St. Mary’s plays its home games in Turpin Stadium, which is where the Nortwestern Demons play their home games.
The stadium sits 16,000 and has an artificial turf field.
Moy is hoping the Northwestern State coaches are in the stands because the Demons have a home game the next night.
“It is going to be a good experience for our kids,” said Moy about the game. “We are looking at it as a playoff game. I do not mind driving three hours for the game.”
St. Mary’s will give Abbeville’s defense a solid test in Week 1 because of their explosive offense.
Adam Parker will be under center for the Tigers or more accurately in the pistol/shotgun. The junior QB has been getting many accolades in the off-season and is projected to be one of the top QB’s in central Louisiana. He threw for almost 1,600 yards and 16 touchdowns. Parker performed well in the summer 7-on-7 activities and won the Shootout in Texas with his top target, sophomore Ethan Busby. But it will remain to be seen how 7V7 translates to full games. Busby was named to the all-district team and is looking to add to his stat sheet that includes 61 catches for 624 yards last season.
“Their quarterback is very scary,” said Moy. “St. Mary’s is a good football team.”
