After a 4-3 vote, Whitney “Jean” Broussard, Jr. was named the school board member in District E. He becomes only the third person to represent the district in 24 years.
He takes over the chair after long-time school board member Anthony Fontana resigned last month.
Voting for Broussard were Chris Gautreaux, Chris Hebert, Stacy Landry and JP Moreno. Voting against him were Laura LeBeouf and Sara Duplechain.
He spent 20 years in the United States Air Force. where he dealt with accounting and finances.
Broussard has been going to the school board meetings for the last six months because he had interest in running. His interest peaked when Fontana announced he would retire at the end of his term in December of 2018. Fontana decided not to serve out his entire.
“I want to serve my community and to give my service back to the community since I retired,” said Broussard.
One of Broussard’s strong points is his personality, which plays a big part of him being able to get a long with everyone. He is hoping that will help in bringing the school board together.
“It looks like there has been some animosity and back room agendas,” said Broussard about the school board. “I would like change that. I have the ability to talk to other people.”
He gave the example of how his personality helped get the United States more money.
While in the Air Force, Broussard was a military liaison between the Air Force and the Military Kuwait Defense. One of his jobs in the Air Force was to try and convince the
Kuwait Government to give to the United States more money to protect Kuwait. He was successful because Kuwait went from giving the United States $16 million a year to $67 million year.
“I credit my country attitude and diplomatic skills to be able to convince them that it was the right thing to do,” he said.
He knows it will be “a challenge” to bring this board together. “I look forward to working with them.

MAURICE — Alana Brooke Duhon, 16, of Abbeville, LA died February 4, 2018 as a result of an automobile accident.
She was born December 18, 2001 in Lafayette. She is the daughter of Denry Duhon and Stacy Primeaux Duhon. She was a sophomore at North Vermilion High School where she was a member of the State Championship Lady Patriot Softball Team and was an active member of the 4H Club.
She was known by her parents as a "hot mess" and by her friends as the "Selfie Queen". She never took a selfie without sticking out her tongue or puckering her lips.
She will be truly missed by her sisters, Ashley and Amy Duhon, who fought daily for hugs that she didn't give freely. "Tauntie" will be greatly missed by her nephew, William Best. She is sharing her angel wings with one of her best friends, Sydney Colomb, who was in the fatal accident with her.
She is survived by her father, Denry Duhon of Meaux and her mother, Stacy Primeaux Duhon of Abbeville. Her two sisters, Ashley and Amy Duhon, her nephew, William Best. Her maternal grandmother Joyce Gisclair Anderson and her husband Donald, and paternal grandfather Ronald Paul Duhon.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather James Primeaux and his wife Barbara Hood Primeaux, and her paternal grandmother Virley Bodin Duhon.
Pallbearers will be her Godfathers Justin Bourque and Damien Duhon. Her uncle Bart Primeaux, and cousins Joshua Bourque, Dawson Bourque, Zachary Broussard, and Riley Baumgardner.
Visitation will be on Thursday, February 8th from 2pm until 9pm, with a rosary being recited at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. on Friday, February 9th. A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Maurice, LA at 2pm by Rev Paul Bienvenu.
After the services, a gathering of family and friends will be held at St. Alphonsus' Church hall.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash on U.S. Hwy. 167 south of La. Hwy. 697.
The crash took the lives of 16-year-old Alana Duhon of Abbeville and 15-year-old Sydney Colomb of Maurice.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 20-year-old Tyler J. Meaux of Abbeville was traveling south in the northbound lanes of U.S. Hwy. 167 in a 2013 Ford F-150. At the same time, Duhon was traveling north in the left hand lane of U.S. Hwy. 167 in a 2012 Honda Civic. The F-150 struck the Civic head-on.
Despite the fact that she was properly restrained, Duhon suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Impairment on her part is not suspected. Colomb was a rear-seat passenger in the Civic. She was unrestrained and suffered fatal injuries. Two other teenage male passengers in the Civic were transported from the scene to Lafayette General Medical Center with moderate injuries.
Meaux was unrestrained at the time of the crash but suffered only minor injuries. After the crash, he fled the scene on foot. Meaux was located a short time later on U.S. Hwy. 167 and taken into custody. Impairment on his part is suspected, and a toxicology sample was taken from him to be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Meaux was placed under arrest and booked into the Vermilion Parish Jail for Vehicular homicide (2 counts), First-degree vehicular negligent injuring (2 counts), Reckless operation of a vehicle, Hit and run driving, One way roadways, and No seat belt. This crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired can be deadly. To prevent tragedies such as this one from occurring, Troopers urge drivers to make good decisions while in motor vehicles. Never drive while impaired, avoid all distractions, and always wear your seat belt regardless of seating position. Taking simple steps such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.

The Krewe de la Renaissance Acadienne held its 12th annual ball at seven-thirty in the evening on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Lafayette. The theme of the ball was “Camelot”.
Reigning over the festivities were Krewe de la Renaissance Acadienne’s King XII, Ray (Trey) Dugal III, and Queen XII, Jessica Roy.
King Trey is married to Allison, and together they have five children, Ray IV, age 15, who is attending Kaplan High, Aidan and Ashton age 11, in their last year at Seventh Ward Elementary, Alex, age 8, and Izzie, age 6.
Trey graduated from USL with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science and worked at Gulf Coast Bank for 11 years. He has made the transition to R4 Specialties, where he is the current CFO. He has also served on the Vermilion Parish Chamber Board of Directors for seven years and was the president in 2010.
His queen, Jessica Berzas Roy, is a 1994 graduate of Erath High School who married her high school sweetheart, Jason Roy, in 1997. They have two children: Mason, age 15, who attends Erath High School and Anabelle, age 10, who is a student at LeBlanc Elementary.
In 1999, Jessica graduated from UL Lafayette with a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies and has been employed by Action Specialties, as an inside sales assistant, for the past 15 years. Jessica has been a member of Krewe de la Renaissance Acadienne for six years.
Presenting the night’s program was “Jason Chaucer”, the historical herold, played by Jason Roy. Assisting as the night’s Royal Escorts were the King’s sons, Aiden and Ashton Dugal. Serving as maidens for the evening were the daughters of the King & Queen: Alex Richard, Izzie Richard, and Anabelle Roy.
The king and queen and ball attendees were treated to a fun evening of entertainment as the royal court performed skits based on a fun twist to the Legend of Camelot.
The opening scene included bar patrons, wenches, and bandits entertaining the crowd to “Wanted – Dead or Alive”.
Bar patrons were played by Coco Broussard, Wayne Mouton, Tommy Terrebonne, Blake Broussard, and Seth Comeaux.
Wenches for the evening were played by Ali Dugal, Deborah Savoie, Monique Terrebonne, Amy Nunez, and Tammy Comeaux.
The Krewe’s bandits included Todd Lucas, Ray Dugal, and Mason Roy.
An entertaining knight tournament to took place to win the hearts of the queen and the ladies in waiting played by Kayla Lucas, Joan Broussard, and Jessica Mouton. Knights for the ball were Wayne Mouton, Coco Broussard, Tommy Terrebonne, Seth Comeaux, and Lance Savoie. Merlin the Magician, played by Blake Broussard, and his witches, Allison Broussard and Katelyn Broussard, entertained the crowd to “I Got the Magic in Me”.
The finale of the evening took place as the 2018 King and Queen took their rightful place and the transition of power took place. Members of the Krewe’s board were introduced, as well as the Krewe’s past kings and queens. After the king and queen toasted the court and audience, all royalty members paraded through the ballroom and threw beads and trinkets to the attending guests while dancing to “Shook me all night long”.
Concluding the evening was live entertainment by Fifth Avenue.
