According to Sheriff Eddie Langlinais, on Dec. 17 at 2:50 a.m., an inmate notified correctional deputies at the Vermilion Parish Correctional Center of an inmate experiencing a medical emergency.

Upon opening the cell, correctional deputies found that Mitchel P. Bertrand (W/M, DOB: 11/20/1971) of Abbeville was unresponsive and not breathing.
Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office Correctional Deputies immediately began performing Life-Saving measures on Bertrand until Acadian Ambulance Service paramedics arrived.

Abbeville's Christmas Celebration a huge success

The Christmas Celebration in Abbeville is getting bigger each year, and this year may have been the best.
On Saturday, downtown Abbeville looked like a Hallmark TV movie, with white lights lighting up buildings and the streets.
The day began early with a car show and musical entertainment, and it capped off with a 5:30 p.m. parade and a visit from Santa in Magdalen Square.
With perfect weather, the Abbeville streets were packed along the parade route, which began at Jim’s Tire Service and ended at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church.
The parade lasted 45 minutes.
“I think the celebration has grown yearly,” said Rotary Club President Todd Chauvin.
Claire Broussard is the president of the Christmas Celebration. She said the parade was twice as big as usual and lasted 45 minutes.
“There were more floats that were decorated with a theme,” she said.
Magdalen Square was full of vendors that remained open until 8 p.m.
At the end of the parade, the Abbeville Rotary Club donated toys to more than 1,000 children waiting in line for the free toys.
A new added attraction that was a hit was a hand-made train featuring train cars that children could ride in.
This past Saturday, from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., Stacy Landry, the conductor, drove a train full of children around the courthouse and dropped them off at Magdalen Square.

Jonathan Dartez heads up for in the first half.

Vermilion Catholic's Dartez has outstanding performance in state finals

He has 47 carries which is a state record

NEW ORLEANS - What an epic way to wrap up your last high school football game! You’re out there on Louisiana’s biggest stage, showcasing your skills in front of thousands of fans and on TV, and it all pays off in the end.
That was the case for Jonathan “Jon Jon” Dartez.
Dartez, the quarterback for VC for the past four years, rushed a record-high 47 times during the LHSAA Prep Classic, the most in its 44-year history. These carries were crucial as he led VC to its third state title, achieving a 33-21 victory over Ouachita Christian on Thursday.
“Forty-seven carries,” Ouachita Christian head coach Steven Fitzhugh said. “He ought to sleep well tonight.”
Dartez finished with 253 yards, scored two touchdowns, and threw two more touchdowns to finish his history-making career with 177 touchdowns - now the state’s all-time TD record holder.
He was also named the Division IV Select Finals’ Outstanding Player.
Dartez ended his final season with 2,761 yards rushing and 44 touchdowns, 1,638 passing yards, and another 23 scores.
During the press conference following the game, Dartez reflected on his roots.
“I just want to give a shout out to the Abbeville and Vermilion Parish,” said Dartez. “I want to thank everyone, including my parents. I know they sacrificed a lot for me to be a VC. “
Carrying the pigskin 40 or more times is nothing new to Dartez. He has carried the ball 40 times three times this year, however. Forty-seven is the most this year.
His longest run of the night was a 44-yard touchdown run with 10 seconds to play in the first quarter. He also had a three-yard TD run at the 8:04 mark in the first quarter.   In the first quarter, he had 113 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns.
He also threw two touchdown passes. He completed a 12-yard TD pass to Allen McLain III in the second period and a 20-yard TD pass to Jyrin Bessard in the third quarter.
Two years ago, Dartez was a sophomore, and VC head coach Broc Prejean was a third-year head coach when VC lost 28-14 to OCS in the Superdome.
Now, Prejean has his first state championship as a coach, 21 years after being a part of the school’s first title as a player.
“Super special memory back in ‘03,” Prejean said, “but if I’m being upfront and honest, there’s an amount of emotion and reward far greater than that.”
This season, Dartez set specific goals at the beginning. One goal was to help VC win a Division IV state title.
On Thursday, in front of at least 15 reporters, including 7 TV reporters after the game, Dartez explained to the media one of the things that fueled him all year.
“In August, one reporter asked me where I see myself at the end of the year,” Dartez said in the press conference at the end of the game.  “I told him I see myself winning the state championship.  The reporter responded by telling me to be more realistic. That response by the reporter  really frustrated me all season.”
Dartez should no longer be frustrated because he accomplished his goal of helping the VC Eagles win a state title.

Caleb Guidry (11) heads up field after the interception with under 10 seconds to play in the game.

Vermilion Catholic wins third state title

Eagles defeat Ouachita Christian, 33-21

NEW ORLEANS – For the first time in 11 years and the third time overall, the Vermilion Catholic Eagles are state champions, defeating Ouachita Christian in the Select Division IV championship game 33-21.
VC (14-0) clung to a 26-21 lead as OCS marched down the field with time running out in the fourth quarter.  On fourth and 10 from the VC 21-yard-line with 26 seconds left in the game, OCS quarterback N.L. Vidrine threw to the left sideline.  VC’s Caleb Guidry stepped in front of the receiver and raced 87 yards for the title-clinching touchdown.
“That was for the seniors,” Guidry said.  “I just wanted to make that play for them.”
“Watching Caleb race down the sideline, my first inkling was to look up at the scoreboard to see if we were good,” Eagles head coach Broc Prejean added.  “It’s a surreal moment when you recognize that the guys you love in this world have achieved a goal they fought so hard for.”
The Eagles jumped ahead 13-0 in the first quarter behind two Jonathan Dartez rushing touchdowns.  His first score from three yards out capped a 16-play, 80-yard drive that ate 7:55 of the game clock.  The second was a 44-yard burst as Dartez rushed for 113 yards in the first quarter.
OCS (13-2) struck back 11 seconds into the second quarter when Vidrine connected with Ridge Coats.  Coats took it 75 yards to paydirt to make it 13-7.  After an interception, OCS drove 59 yards for another touchdown and a 14-13 lead with 5:18 to play in the half.
VC answered when Dartez hit Allen McLain III from 12 yards out for the touchdown, capping a 13-play, 65-yard drive. The score gave the Eagles a 20-14 halftime lead.
The Eagles went back on top by two scores in the third quarter when Dartez found Jyrin Bessard from 20 yards out for the touchdown and a 26-14 lead.
OCS kept battling as Vidrine connected with Cameron Volion for a 46-yard touchdown pass to pull them within 26-21 and set the stage for Guidry’s heroics.
Dartez set a new state record with 47 carries in the championship game.  He turned those carries into 253 yards and two touchdowns.  He also completed eight-of-eleven passes for 82 yards and two touchdowns.
Bessard caught three passes for 39 yards and a touchdown, while Will Simon caught two balls for 15 yards. Allen McLain caught one pass for 12 yards and a score, while Hudson Hebert also caught one ball for 13 yards, and Ross Dartez caught one for three yards.
Defensively, Luke McLain had a team-high seven tackles, including a sack, three tackles for loss, and a forced fumble.  Allen McLain III had three tackles and a sack, while Ben Constantin and Alex Broussard finished with five tackles.
“What a battle,” said Prejean.  “Two teams that do it the right way, respecting each other and the game.  These kids deserve this.”
