Abbeville runs over St. Mary’s

NACHITOCHES - The Abbeville Wildcats travelled three hours and got the win it wanted on Friday. The Wildcats wore down the St. Mary’s Tigers.
The Wildcats led 21-17 at halftime and went on to win 43-23.
The Wildcats rushed for 361 yards on 37 carries.
Running back Blake Saddler led all rushers with eight carries for 170 yards. Saddler also had a school-record 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Quaterback Jaysen Shelvin, running out of the Veer, had 10 carries for 115 yards. Shelvin and Saddler had each two touchdowns.
“This is win means we are keeping the course,” said AHS head coach Roderick Moy. “We are 1-0 and that is where we want to be.”
While the score looks like a blowout, St. Mary’s stayed in the game in the first half. The Class 1A school gave Abbeville, a Class 3A school, all it could handle.
Moy said that was because of Abbeville’s mistakes.
“We had four mental breakdown” Moy added. “We could have won a lot bigger had we not had those breakdowns.”
The Wildcats fumbled four times and lost three of those four fumbles.
St. Mary’s did have success throwing the football, by throwing for 156 yards.
Abbeville completed only one pass for eight yards.
The Wildcats are home Friday to battle Central Catholic of Morgan City.
