Several in Vermilion Parish qualify for Oct. 12 election

Qualifying for the Oct. 12 election kicked off Tuesday morning, with candidates entering numerous races in both Vermilion Parish and on the state level.
Qualifying will wrap up Thursday afternoon. Candidates interested in running for any of the offices for this election can officially qualify at Vermilion Parish Clerk of Court Diane Meaux Broussard’s office, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Broussard’s office is located on the first floor of the Vermilion Parish Courthouse in downtown Abbeville.

Here is the list of candidates who have qualified as of Thursday afternoon:

District Attorney Keith Stutes announces recent convictions for Vermilion Parish

The following defendants were convicted or pled guilty to various charges in the month of July and were sentenced in the 15th Judicial District Court, Parish of Vermilion:

1. Nathan Campbell, Indecent Behavior with a Juvenile, 2 years hard labor, suspended, 2 years active supervised probation

2. Antonio Gilbert, Auto Insurance Fraud, 5 years hard labor

3. John Nunez, Aggravated Flight, 10 months hard labor

4. Desmond Young, Attempted Molestation of Juvenile Under 13, Presentence Report ordered

Passion To Ride: Abbeville teen finds love in equestrian riding

Seventeen-year-old Abbi Jo Faul of Abbeville will be attending the United States Equestrian Federation’s (USEF) Pony Finals this month. Partnered with her horse, La Belle Maria, she will compete against other Pony Finals qualifiers in the nation.
The competition is set to take place at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY.
Faul is a student at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, LA and she, along with ‘Maria’ will be representing the Academy of the Sacred Heart Equestrian Center during the competition.

Superintendent Jerome Puyau showed up to work last week with tape on his mouth after the school board instructed him not to speak to school employees while on administrative leave. This week he removed the tape and went to work, getting ready for a new school year.

Vermilion Parish School Superintendent Jerome Puyau went to work as usual this week despite how the Vermilion Parish School Board voted last week.
A week ago the School Board placed Superintendent Jerome Puyau on administrative leave to investigate the superintendent. Thus far, Puyau has not spent a day at home since he has been placed on paid leave. Instead, Puyau showed up for work Friday morning and continues to show up for work.
He has worked six days since being placed on administrative leave.

Maurice Police wearing body cameras

MAURICE — Whether it is during a traffic stop or responding to other calls, Village of Maurice Chief of Police Guy Nerren will be able to view interactions between his officers and the public.
That is because when police officers interact with citizens in the Village of Maurice, there will be a video record.
Chief of Police Guy Nerren said that he has purchased body cameras for his officers. The total cost for the five cameras is $3,400.
