There are drainages scattered on the grounds of Erath High and Erath Middle School. The water flows into the drainage pipe and then the water is pumped out into a bayou.

Vermilion Parish School employees begin closing flood protection wall gates

The Vermilion Parish school system is not taking chances when it comes to preparing for high waters in Vermilion Parish.
There are five schools with a flood protection wall around each school.
On Monday, the school system emergency plan kicked into effect and personnel were busying closing flood gates at each school.

Three wanted for shooting in Abbeville arrested in Alabama

Three men wanted by Abbeville Police in connection to a shooting that occurred in April are now in custody.
Mortimer Cottrell Jr., 27, Josiah Cottrell, 20, and Timothy Cottrell, 17, have each been booked into the Vermilion Parish Correctional Center on attempted second-degree murder chargers. The bond for those charges has been set at $500,000 for each man.
U.S. Marshall’s and deputies with the Mobile Sheriff’s Office arrested the three without incident in Mobile, Ala.

The search for a 12-year-old Gueydan boy Garrick Neil Jr. who drowned Sunday in the Calcasieu River off La. 26 just west of Oberlin has ended. h The boy's body was found at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday.
Allen Parish Sheriff Doug Hebert III said Monday dive and search teams from surrounding parishes have been using sonar equipment, cadaver dogs and other resources to search the swift river since the boy was last seen around 3:30 p.m. last Sunday . They also reported that the river was about nine feet above normal, making it difficult for even a strong swimmer to get across.

Sheriff’s Office comes through to repair two Erath Police cars

ERATH — Good news for the patrolmen of the Erath Police Department.
By the end of this week, all patrolmen should be driving vehicles with AC.
Last week the Abbeville Meridional first reported that three Erath units did not have air conditioners and patrolmen were having to drive with no AC as the temperature approached 90 degrees.
After reading the story in the Meridional, Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillion contacted Erath Police Chief Anna LaPointe about repairing two units with no AC units.

Kaplan electricity billing restructured, rates not increasing

Contrary to rumors circulating on social media about utility rate increases, Kaplan Councilwoman and Utility Committee Chairman Melissa Guidry stated, “This is simply not the case.
“To set the record straight, the city of Kaplan is not increasing electrical rates by 12%.”
According to Guidry, the proposal reflects an increase to water, sewer and gas rates only.
The city has consistently lost revenue from these services. It is costing the city more to provide the services than the charges being collected.
