Quarterback Zach Guidry is not afraid to run with the football for Gueydan.

Good things happening in Gueyda: Bears on 3-game winning streak

BASILE - There is a whole lot of smiling going on at Gueydan High School this week.
Everyone is smiling because the Gueydan Bears beat Grand Lake 29-26 last week in district action and are on a three-game winning streak.
With the win from ast week, the Bears have locked up a playoff bid. They are now playing for a chance to play at home in the first round.
Grand Lake came into Gueydan with a 5-2 overall record and a 2-2 district record. They left Gueydan with third district loss and regular-season loss.
Gueydan’s Cameron Istre rushed for 185 yards on 24 carries, while teammate Lane Breaux had 90 yards on 10 carries.
Can the Bears do it again tonight?
The Bears are in Basile to battle the Bearcats. The Bearcats are 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the district. If the Bearcats win, it will keep them in the hunt for District 4-1A district title.
Gueydan (4-4 overall, 3-2), on the other hand, would love to win its final two games as a way to move up in the Class A power ratings.
The Bears are at No. 14 in the latest power rating, and the Bearcats are at No. 10.
The top 16 teams get a home first-round home game. The top seven teams get a first-round bye in Class 1A playoffs.
If the Bears can pull off a win, they will climb in powerpoint standings and lock in a first-round playoff home game. They close out the season against Elton (0-8).
Gueydan head coach Roderick Moy said his Bears could, but they have to play well.
“If we don’t turn it over, we have a good shot,” said Moy.
Basile is blessed with running backs.
Isaiah Ceaser rushed for 136 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns for Basile last week. Izzy Drehemiss added another 135 yards on 11 carries in the same game.
The Bears bring in a running game of their own.
Breaux and Istre are the work horses on the team.
Breaux has 114 carries for 670 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Istre has 114 carries for 614 yards.
The Bears are not one dimensional. They also can throw the football.
Freshman quarterback Zachary Guidry has showed he has a solid arm. Guidry has completed 40-out-of-84 passes for 546 yards.
The last time the Bearcats and Bears faced each other, Basile won 28-6 in 2010.
