Improving Each Year: Abbeville volleyball team eager to build on last year’s success
When a volleyball team ends the season with a 9-14 overall record, some would argue it was a terrible year. For the Abbeville Lady Wildcats Volleyball Team, nine wins is a great season. The Lady Wildcats won nine matches last year which is twice as many wins as the year before.
With the 2019 season fast approaching, the Lady Wildcats plan to build on those wins with the help of eight seniors.
AHS Volleyball head coach Ashley Boudreaux is looking forward to this season.
“It has been fun watching these girls grow and become more and more successful,” said Boudreaux. “I have never had a group of girls that have worked so hard and have improved so much as this group has. They are a joy to coach, and we plan on improving our record.”
The senior volleyball players are Destiny Alarcon, Kennedy Gordon, Janie Istre, Jyriah Reaux, Alexis Reed, Yasmend Reed, Jamyrie White and Coriana Willis.
Alarcon is one of two starters returning for AHS. She is part of that sizeable senior group.
“I am expecting a really good year,” said Alarcon. “With several seasoned seniors returning and a versatile group of upperclassmen, we hope to improve on our 2018 record.”
Another bright spot for the Lady Wildcats is that there is a large freshmen class, said Alarcon.
The program is starting its third year playing varsity volleyball.
The season starts later than last year. Abbeville opens the season with five straight matches on the road. Its first match is on the road against Opelousas (Sept. 3) and then at Patterson on Sept.4
The Lady Wildcats’ first match at home is against Patterson on Sept. 17.
