Science Academy visits Gueydan to open season
GUEYDAN - At the time, it looked like a good team to schedule, thought Gueydan head coach Roderick Moy.
Tonight the GHS Bears entertain the Science Academy Nautilus football team out of New Orleans. They are a Class 3A football team with just over 35 players. Last year they finished 3-7 and barley lost to Jeanerette 21-20 in the season opener.
Moy saw that the Science Academy football team was searching for pre-district opponents on the LHSAA website. He contacted them and set up a home and home matchup with them.
Now, after looking at film on Science Academy, he may be having second thoughts.
“When they get off the bus, everyone will ask me what is wrong with me for scheduling this game, “ Moy said. “But we will see if we are up to the challenge and ready to make a quarterfinal run or just trying to beat a bad team. We will be tested.”
Moy said Science Academy looks big and physical on film.
Last year Science Academy threw for just over 1,000-yards. However, last year’s quarterback Darryl Montgomery graduated. The 3-7 squad graduated ninth and returned six seniors.
The Bears, who are coming off a 7-4 from last year, return with nine seniors.
The seniors who are being called on to continue the success at Gueydan are Cameron Istre (5-8, 150), Alex Williams (6-3, 190), Lane Breaux (5-9, 170), Ethan Gaspard (5-11, 240), Trip Hanks (5-11, 175), Gabe Carlson (5-10, 205), Bryc Theriot (5-10, 186) and Ryan Lemaire (5-11, 200).
Five out of the eight seniors will hardly ever come off the field.
Seniors playing on both sides of the football will be Istre (running back, cornerback), Breaux (fullback, strong safety), Alex Williams (wide receiver, cornerback), Carlson (lineman, linebacker) and Gaspard (lineman).
“This game is going to be a good test for us,” said Moy.
