Third time a charm for Gueydan
GUEYDAN - The third time was the charm for the Gueydan Honeybears Thursday night in the Class 1A playoffs.
Gueydan advances to the second round after beating Oberlin, 48-44. Gueydan plays No. 2 East Iberville, who drew a first-round bye.
The game will be Monday at 6 p.m. on the road.
The No. 15 Honeybears drew No. 18 Oberlin in the first round. That was good news and bad news for Gueydan.
The good news was that Oberlin was no stranger to Gueydan. They played one another twice this season, so both teams knew one another.
However, the bad news was Oberlin beat Gueydan twice this year.
The Honeybears were determined not to fall a third time to Oberlin.
The first quarter decided nothing. Oberlin led 14-13.
Gueydan slowly pulled away in the second quarter by outscoring Oberlin 15-9.
Gueydan went into half time leading 28-23.
Kirsten Reed had a great game inside for Gueydan. She scored 13 of her team-high 14 points in the first half.
Both teams scored 21 points each in the second half.
Kaelynn Bertrand and Ryleigh Istre contributed 11 points each for Gueydan. Gracie Simon made seven.
Gueydan only shot 50 percent at the free-throw line (12 of 24).
