Vermilion Parish has its sixth COVID-19 death; number of cases reaches 238

State health officials are reporting one new death in Vermilion Parish that is related to COVID-19.
The number of deaths from coronavirus in Vermilion Parish is now six.
According to the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), there are also 10 new cases of COVID-19 in the parish, bringing the total to 238 since the state began a tally in March. There were nine new cases reported on Sunday, June 28, after the state added 35 cases on Friday. That state did not report cases on Saturday, due to a planned power outage.

Drive-thru testing offered in Vermilion Parish

Vermilion Parish will offer no-cost, drive-thru COVID-19 testing to parish residents during June and July. The testing is in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Health, Vermilion Parish Police Jury and Louisiana National Guard.

Testing will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on the following dates:

East Lafayette Street
Maurice

Monday, June 22
Old Abbeville Health Unit

Louisiana will move into Phase Two

It was long-awaited good news for certain businesses when Gov. John Bel Edwards announced on Monday he will move Louisiana into Phase 2.
Phase 2 will go into effect on Friday of this week.
Phase 2 means bars and massage and tattoo parlors are now allowed to open. Other businesses can increase their capacity from 25 percent to 50 percent.

Vermilion Parish Correctional Center remains closed to public

It has been two months since Vermilion Parish prisoners have had visitors, and nothing will change for the rest of May.
Because of the coronavirus, all prisons in Louisiana stopped having public visitation. The only visitors were attorneys and law enforcement.
Last week the state went into Phase 1, which meant some businesses were able to open and operate.
However, there is a handful that still remain closed, such as bars, massage and tattoo shops.
Nursing homes and prisons are still not allowing public visitors.

Mom creates North Vermilion masks for seniors

When North Vermilion High seniors get their diploma, they will be wearing a matching homemade surgical mask with the North Vermilion Patriot logo.
Monique LeMaire is the mother of junior Colin LeMaire. She operates a screen-printing shop and has provided NV T-shirts to North Vermilion over years.
She got wind that for North Vermilion High’s graduation, the seniors and everyone who will be handing out awards will have to have surgical masks because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
LeMaire wanted to do her part to help make graduation enjoyable for the seniors.
