Diana Cormier

September 23, 1948 ~ March 18, 2021

ABBEVILLE — A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at 3:00 PM to celebrate the life of Diana Cormier, 72, of Lyons Point, who died suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday, March 18, 2021 in Metairie, LA.
Diana was the beloved wife of Nancy Hirzel.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Hodo Paul and Leona K. Cormier; her brother, Bradley J. Cormier.
Survivors include her sister, Catherine (Jules) Mayeux of Abbeville; nephew, Luke O. Mayeux of Maurice; niece, Ellen (Reed) Eldridge of Zachary; and six grand nieces and nephews, Gracie Mayeux, Andrew Mayeux, Leona Eldridge, Cora Eldridge, Jack Eldridge, Max Eldridge and one brother-in-law, David Hirzel.
Diana was born in Crowley LA on September 23, 1948.  She graduated from Crowley High School in 1966 and attended Touro Infirmary School of Nursing, graduating in 1969 and receiving the award for Most Outstanding Nursing Student of her graduating class.  She took the first of her nursing jobs at Charity Hospital Psychiatric Unit in New Orleans.  Diana traveled to Orlando FL in 1973 and worked there for a year before returning to Charity Hospital.  Later she worked for East Jefferson Mental Health Center, Norco Substance Abuse Clinic, and Jefferson Substance Abuse Clinic.  In 1990 Jefferson Substance Abuse Clinic, Jefferson Mental Health, and Developmental Disabilities became Jefferson Parish Human Services Authority.  There Diana counseled female victims of substance abuse, and created and coordinated the dual diagnosis program for mental health patients who also had substance abuse problems.  She later became the director of nursing for the agency, in addition to her counseling duties.  She always said she had the best career anybody could have.
Diana loved to travel and she took the first of her many trips to Europe, staying there for two months in 1970.  She returned in 1972, this time staying a total of four months, two of them in Florence Italy, one of her favorite places.
Diana met Nancy Hirzel while living in Orlando in 1973.  They got together in California in 1977 and returned to Louisiana later that year, the beginning of their loving and committed relationship that would have had its 44th anniversary in April of 2021.  They were legally married in Santa Fe, NM on August 26th 2013.
Both Diana and Nancy loved to travel, going to Greece 32 times over the years, in the beginning for a full month and extending that to two full months each year after they both retired in 2004.  In addition to Greece, they spent time in Turkey, Egypt, London, Rome, Paris, and Mexico City, lighting candles in every church they found along the way.  They always had a camper of one kind or another throughout their years traveling all around the USA, starting with a van and ending with a comfortable motor home, their roving home for seven months of each year for extended stays in Florida, Arizona, and New Mexico.  The coming of COVID ended their wider travels for 2020 (except for stays in the Metairie Ramada with daily visits to Barnes and Noble there), where they worked on plans to venture out again to Greece and NM in 2021.
Diana would want to give thanks to all of her family and friends who shared life, travels, stories, dinners, and companionship throughout her life.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles St., on Thursday, March 25, 2021 from 10:00 AM until time of service. A Eulogy will begin at 1:30pm. Following the eulogy, words of remembrance will be said; all are welcome to partake.  A rosary is being prayed at 2:30 PM.

Vermilion Parish School Board still wants nine-member board

The Vermilion Parish School Board hired demographer Mike Hefner to begin figuring out how to create nine school board districts.
The school board voted at least two years ago to go from an eight-board to a nine-board because of the population’s rise in the northern part of the parish.
When the board voted to go to nine districts, they also decided to wait until the 2020 census was completed to get accurate population numbers.
Typically, by now, Hefner would have the 2020 census numbers of the population in Vermilion Parish. But due to of COVID-19, getting census results have been pushed back by at least six months, explained Hefner.
“I was hoping to get data in August, but because of COVID, the Census data has been extended into 2021. Until the census data is released, I can not do anything.”
The original game plan was to have the new 2020 census population numbers by April and then begin drawing new lines and then having public meetings to let the public go over the new district lines at public meetings.
Everything needed to be approved and finalized before qualifying begins in July of 2022 for the November school board election in 2022. Vermilion Parish voters would be voting for school board members for nine districts in 2022.
But with the new census data being pushed back at least six months, Hefner could not give a definite date on when the new district lines would be drawn. There is also a chance that when the 2022 school board election rolls around, the new nine school board districts may not be completed in time for the election.

Gov. John Bel Edwards

ATTEMPT TO RECALL EDWARDS FALLS SHORT

BATON ROUGE — Efforts to remove Gov. John Bel Edwards from office because of complaints about his coronavirus restrictions and mask mandate have failed.
The Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office said Friday that all parishes but one have completed counting signatures on a petition seeking to recall the Democratic governor, and the numbers have fallen far below what is needed to force a recall election.
Only 26,679 signatures had been submitted by parish registrars of voters, according to Secretary of State spokesperson John Tobler. That’s less than 1 percent of registered voters.
The petition was filed with the Secretary of State’s Office on Aug. 29. To be successful, supporters of the recall effort needed to get signatures from 20 percent of voters within 180 days to hold an election on whether to recall the governor. That’s nearly 600,000 signatures.
Edwards is serving his second term as governor. He was re-elected in 2019.
The recall petition was filed by Lee Joseph Vidrine and Michael Lyn Vidrine, both of Eunice.
In its reason for seeking a recall, the petition accused Edwards of “impeding the constitutional freedoms and livelihoods of all Louisiana citizens without concrete scientific data” and “unconstitutionally mandating that masks be worn in all public places.”
Several judges in the state have upheld Edwards’ coronavirus restrictions and face covering requirement since the lawsuit was filed.

Abbeville Council votes to bring unincorporated ‘island’ into city limits

Islands have been a recurring topic of discussion for the Abbeville City Council in recent months.
Abbeville has five “islands” within the city limits. Those are unincorporated areas that are completely surrounded by city limits, but are not part of the city and not subject to the city’s ordinances, a fact that has created some concern for city officials.
After Tuesday’s regular city council meeting, there is one less island in the city.
The council unamiously approved an ordinance incorporating unincorporated “Island 3” into the City limits of the City of Abbeville. The area is located near the southwest corner of the La. 14 Bypass and Coulee Kinney.
“There’s no residence there and there are no voters there,” Mayor Mark Piazza said. “The property owners do not live in Abbeville.”
The city held a public hearing prior to voting on the issue. No one from the audience spoke about the item.
With Tuesday’s move, there are still four islands in the city. Again, the issue city officials have brought up is that ordinances do not apply. Most recently, an electronic billboard went up on one of the unincorporated islands on Park Avenue. The city has an ordinance that prohibits such billboards. The owner of the billboard did receive permits from the Louisiana
Department of Transportation and Development and the Vermilion Parish Police Jury.
The city is seeking help from Baton Rouge to resolve the island issue. At its meeting on March 2, the council voted to adopt a resolution requesting the Vermilion delegation to the Louisiana Legislature to sponsor legislation to amend Article I of the Charter creating the City of Abbeville to redraw the corporate limits of said City to include the islands. This would make everything within the boundaries of a map at city hall part of the city.
Piazza said Rep. Ryan Bourriaque will file a house bill during the Louisiana Legislature’s upcoming 2021 session. That session begins on April 12 and goes through June 10.
