Vermilion Parsih ninth in graduation rate

The Louisiana Department of Education released graduation rates for the 2015-16 school year and Vermilion Parish continues to rank among the best.
The school district had a 90.6 graduation rate, good for ninth in the state. Lincoln Parish, which ranked one spot ahead of Vermilion, had a 90.7 graduation rate.
The state average is 77 percent.
Vermilion did drop 2.9 percentage points from its 2014-15 rate.

Abbeville man allegedly fires gun into car

An Abbeville man now sits behind bars after being arrested by the Abbeville Police Department for allegedly firing a gun inside of a car that had two people in it.
Neither of the two people in the car were struck by the bullets. It occurred at the corner of Martin Luther King Street and Schlesinger Street.
Arrested was Charles Lee, 25, of Abbeville. The Abbeville police charged Lee with six different crimes, including two attempted murder charges.

Abbeville receives results of smoke testing

The City of Abbeville recently had smoke testing conducted in the Mount Carmel Heights neighborhood, with the goal of locating breaks in some of the area’s pipes that are allowing rain water to enter the city’s water system.
“We have been having an infiltration problem and some problems with the sewer there,” Abbeville Public Works Director Clay Menard said. “We decided to smoke test the whole entire area that goes into the lift station that is at the corner of Gauraud (Street) and West St. Paul Street.”

Sherry Howell to be sworn in as Maurice Alderwoman on Wednesday

MAURICE — The Village of Maurice Board of Aldermen will hold its monthly meeting Wednesday, with a change of venue.
The meeting will be held at St. Joseph Church Hall in Maurice. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m.
Among the items of business highlighting the meeting will be the swearing-in of Sherry Howell as an alderwomen. She will be filling the seat of her late husband, Lynn Howell, who passed away in January.
“Please join us in welcoming her to the council and wishing her well in fulfilling the duties of Alderwoman,” Maurice Mayor Wayne Theriot said.
