Fallon Lege is Beef Scholarship Winner

Fallon Lege, daughter of Chad and Nikki Lege, has been selected as the Beef Scholarship Winner for the 2019 Louisiana Cattle Festival. Fallon is a 17-year-old senior at Vermilion Catholic High School.  After high school, she plans to attend the University of Louisiana majoring in biology and pursuing a career in medicine. She has one sibling Emma. Fallon is a very active 4-H member who has been participating in the beef project for eight years. She raises and exhibits in the show ring, registered grey Brahman, Red Brangus, and Commercial cattle.  
Fallon received many honors during her beef project. She exhibited her animals on the parish, district, state, and national levels. Fallon enjoyed attending the shows and had tremendous accomplishments in the show ring. She has won several Grand and Reserve champions, she has won the Premier Exhibitor contest on the parish level. Fallon was also a state winner with her Beef Record Books.   She has won trips to Atlanta, Georgia for National
4-H Congress and Disney World. She has been a member of the Louisiana Junior Brahman Association and the American Junior Red Brangus Association for the past six years. Fallon is currently the 2019 Vermilion Parish Cattlemen’s Association Queen. She has been promoting beef at the parish, district, and state levels. She was the second runner up at the Louisiana Cattlemen's Association Queens Contest in January of 2019.
Fallon participated in many 4-H projects and activities throughout her 4-H career. She is an active member of the vermilion Parish 4-H Junior Leader Club, and currently serves as parliamentarian for the club. Fallon is serving as President of her school 4-H club and has been chosen for outstanding club member for five years. She is a member of the 4-H Louisiana State Citizenship Board and was selected to attend the Southern Regional Teen Leadership Conference in Tennessee. Fallon won the State 4-H Emerald Clover Achievement Award, recognizing her for leadership, citizenship, and community service work through her 4-H club. This summer she attended 4-H University and placed 4th in the livestock judging contest. She also attended 4-H camp as a counselor and Marsh Maneuvers at Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge this summer. 
Outside of 4-H, Fallon is very involved in her school and community. She a member of the Vermilion Catholic High School Pro-life club, member of the VCHS campus ministry program, Student Council member, National Honor Society, and Beta Club. She placed third in Agriscience at the State Beta Convention. She is on her school’s soccer team and is a football and softball manager. Fallon is an altar server at St. James and a Core Life Teen member at St. Mary Magdalen. 
Fallon is honored and grateful to be selected as the 2019 Louisiana Cattle Festival Scholarship recipient.

71st Cattle Festival honors Rotary Club of Abbeville with Humanitarian Award

Helping the community is often a group effort.
For its group effort in doing just that, the Rotary Club of Abbeville has received the Humanitarian of the Year honor for the 71st Louisiana Cattle Festival.
The Cattle Festival will be held in Abbeville on Oct. 10-13. The Rotary Club will be among honorees recognized at the Honoree Social and Banquet this Saturday, Oct. 5. The event will begin at 6 p.m. at Magdalen Place in Abbeville.
The Rotary Club of Abbeville is made up of professional business men and women of action. Through the business men and women of Vermilion Parish, the Rotary Club of Abbeville has long recognized and supported Vermilion Parish.
The Club’s mission, and that of Rotary, is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise. That mission is to encourage and foster: 1)the development of acquaintances as an opportunity for service; 2) high ethical standards in business and professions; 3) the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; 4) the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation to serve society; 5) the application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life; and 5) the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
The Rotary Club of Abbeville’s goal is to make Vermilion Parish a great place to live.

Luna Marie Trahan Michaud

Luna passed away at the age of 85 on Tuesday, October 1, 2019. She was a longtime resident of Abbeville.
She graduated from Lafayette High School in 1952, and graduated Valedictorian of her class. 
Luna was employed by the Diocese of Lafayette, and was the Cafeteria Manager at Mount Carmel Elementary, and Vermilion Catholic High School. During her 27 years at Mount Carmel Elementary she was named Manager of the year twice - Once in 1980, and then again in 1994. In 1996 Mount Carmel dedicated the school yearbook in her honor.
Prior to joining the staff at Mount Carmel she worked in the public school system for 5 years. She retired in 1996.
Ready to welcome her in heaven are her parents, T.J Trahan and Hilda Landry Trahan; brother’s - Leroy Trahan and Joseph (Moon) Harris.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Albert Michaud, and her three children - Kellie M. Young and her husband Eddie, James Albert Michaud and his wife Jackie, and Cheryl M. Sellers and her husband Robert. Grand children - Clay Young and his wife Dana,  Andre Young and his wife Maxine, Beau Young and his wife Nicole, Ryan Michaud, and Chasity Touchet. Eleven Great Grandchildren, and Two Great- Great Grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 4, 2019 from 4 PM until 8 PM at Vincent Funeral Home in Abbeville. Today would mark their 67th Wedding Anniversary. A Rosary will be recited at 7 PM at the funeral home. A mass will be held at a later date.

Fr. Louis Richard

Fr. Richard is Cattle Festival’s Citizen of the Year

This year’s honoree for Citizen of the Year for the 71st Annual Louisiana Cattle Festival is Fr. Louis J. Richard.
The Cattle Festival will be held in Abbeville on Oct. 10-13. The Rotary Club will be among honorees recognized at the Honoree Social and Banquet this Saturday, Oct. 5. The event will begin at 6 p.m. at Magdalen Place in Abbeville.
Richard, the current pastor at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, was born and raised in Abbeville. The son of Joyce and the late A.J. Richard, he attended Mt. Carmel. In 1970, Richard entered Immaculata Seminary in Lafayette to begin his studies for the priesthood. He then
completed his undergraduate studies at St. Joseph Seminary College in St. Benedict, La., in 1977, earning at B.A. in Psychology and also Philosophy.
Richard then went to Louvain, Belgium, where he received a STB/MA. in Theology from the Catholic University of Louvain.
He was ordained a priest on Aug. 7, 1981, at 38 years old, at St. Mary Magdalen, the church of all his previous sacraments.
Richard has had assignments at St. Genevieve and St. Pius X in Lafayette, St. Joseph in Milton, St. Michael in Crowley and then Sacred Heart of Jesus in Broussard, until his current assignment back here at St. Mary Magdalen Church in 2014.
Richard also serves as the Chaplain for Acadian Ambulance Service, Inc. Additionally, he is a founder and charter board member of Hospice of Acadiana, the region’s first and only non-profit Hospice program serving those in need of quality end-of-life care.
In 2016, Fr. Richard was appointed as an Episcopal Dean, Representative for the Bishop for the West Region of the Diocese of Lafayette, including all church parishes in Acadia and Vermilion civil parishes. He serves on the Board of Directors for Catholic Charities of Acadiana. He is also the Chancellor for Vermilion Catholic High School.
“It has been a great joy to return home to Abbeville,” Fr. Richard said, “to serve at St. Mary Magdalen, where I grew up. I am touched and deeply honored for this recognition as Citizen of the Year for the 71st Louisiana Cattle Festival.
“I continually ask God to watch over and bless our wonderful community.”

Passenger Succumbs to Injuries After Falling From Pickup in St. Landry Parish

PRAIRIE RONDE – At approximately 8 a.m. on September 21, 2019, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a single vehicle crash on LA 103 South of US-167 in St. Landry Parish. The crash ultimately took the life of 38-year-old Frederick Freeman of Opelousas.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed Freeman was riding in the bed of a 2006 Dodge Dakota. For unknown reasons, Freeman fell out of the moving truck and sustained serious injuries.
Freeman was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. On September 30th, State Police was notified that Freeman succumbed to his injuries on September 27th. The driver was properly restrained and was not injured. Impairment was not suspected on the part of Freeman or the driver. The driver did submit a voluntary breath sample which showed no alcohol present. The driver committed no violations and was not cited. This crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants in a vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired and always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death.

KAPLAN — A Mass of Christian Burial for Beverly Blanc Mire will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 1, 2019, in Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kaplan, LA. Rev. Fr. Gary Schexnayder will celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the Kaplan Cemetery.
Beverly passed away on Friday, September 27, 2019, at her home in Kaplan. She was a longtime resident of Kaplan.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Marion Dale Mire of Kaplan; three sons: Leslie Mire and wife, Nora of Lafayette; Thad Mire and wife, Jana of Kaplan; and Leighton Mire and wife, Holly of Duson; daughter, Retanna Mire of Opelousas; special cousins, Jeanette Pertuit and husband, Wayne of Marrero; sister, Linda B. LeMaire and husband, Leo of Kaplan; brother, Howard Blanc, Jr. of Morgan City; sister-in-law, Shirley Bourque and husband, Donald of Kaplan; brother-in-law, Gerald C. Mire of Kaplan; 7 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and 4 step great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Ready to welcome her in Heaven are her parents, Howard M. Blanc, Sr. and Marie Roche Blanc; sister, Lou Anna B. Faulk and husband, Larry Faulk; brothers, Raymond Mark Blanc and wife, Gladys Blanc; and Gerald Mark Blanc; daughter-in-law, Cherri Saltzman Mire; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elton Mire and Edmay Hardy Mire; paternal grandparents, Eddie and Mary Blanc; maternal grandparents, Leodious and Estelle Roche; and sister-in-law, Kathleen Mire.

Abbeville racks up 511 yards of offense in Friday victory

The Abbeville Wildcats’ offense was clicking Friday against the Beau Chene Gators.
The Wildcats scored a season-high 35 points and produced 511 yards of offense in en route to a 35-25 triumph over Beau Chene.
The Wildcats (1-3) ran a season-high 68 plays compared to Beau Chene’s 58.
On the ground is where the Wildcats did their damage. They rushed for 458 yards behind the legs of Darrian Harrison. Harrison had a season-high 183 yards rushing on 23 carries. He averaged an amazing eight yards a carry each time he touched the football.
Brendan Shelvin had 10 carries for 95 yards and a touchdown.
The Wildcats fell behind 9-7 at the start of the second quarter but then outscored the Gators 20-0 behind its rushing game.
Harrison had a 54-yard TD run and an 11-yard TD run.
Abbeville even threw a touchdown pass. Shelvin completed a 13-yard pass to Garrick Scott in the second quarter.
With five minutes to play in the game, Abbeville led 35-18.
Ten different Wildcats ran the football. Jaidyn O’Brien, who is babying an ankle injury, had three carries for 61 yards. Charles Shufford (3-18 yards) and Eric Levine (4-14 yards) also had carried.
Scott had three catches for 26 yards, and Conner Garret had two for seven yards. Harrison (1-15) and DJ Campbell (1-5) had the other receptions for AHS.
On defense, Abbeville gave up 281 yards.
Kendall Landry led AHS with five solo tackles. Marshal Major (4 solos, three assists) and Christian Alvarez (4 solos, two assists) also had a good game on defense.
The Wildcats are on the road Friday to battle Eunice (3-1). Eunice is coming off a 30-15 loss to Breaux Bridge.

Kaplan Pirates become latest victim of the VC Eagles

KAPLAN - The Kaplan Pirates became the latest victim of the Vermilion Catholic Eagles.
First, there was Class 2A Catholic High of New Iberia. Then last week the Class 3A Abbeville Wildcats could not beat the Eagles. The Kaplan Pirates now join Abbeville and Catholic High in the loss column.
The Eagles, who jumped out to a 17-0 lead, held on to win 25-23 in a parish showdown.
This Friday the Eagles play their third straight Class 3A team when the Erath Bobcats (2-2) visit VC.
Friday’s win was the first time in the school history that VC beat Kaplan. VC lost the last two meetings.
VC head coach Kevin Fouquier told his team to enjoy the win for 24 hours and then begin focusing on Erath.
“This was a big win for us. That is how we play well in all phases of the game,” said the VC head coach to his team.
Before the Pirates’ fans could sit down and enjoy their popcorn, they found their team down 14-0 three minutes into the game.
VC scored on the first-play of the game when junior Josh Sagrera ran the opening kick off 87 yards for a touchdown. J-Rob Alums nailed the extra point. However, on the ensuing kickoff, Fouquier called for a successful onside kick.
Alec Broussard recovered the onside kick at the Kaplan 48-yard line. Five plays later, Moe Maxilie scored a touchdown on a 15-yard run at the 9:40 mark of the first period.
It took VC only 80 seconds to score 14 points.
Fouquier said his game-plan was to try an onside kick as early as possible in the game.
“We had to get an extra possession there somewhere,” said Fouquier.
Up 14-0, the Eagles added three more points when Alums successfully made a 28-yard field goal.
Kaplan finally got the momentum it was looking for at the start of the second period, down 17-0.
The Pirates put together a 22-play, 78-yard drive that took 10 minutes off of the clock.
Kaplan ran 21 running plays on the drive, including a 4-yard TD run by Kevin White. He also scored on a two-point play and just like that, Kaplan was back in the game, down 17-8 at halftime.
On Kaplan’s first possession of the third period, the Pirates fumbled at midfield. The Eagles marched 50 yards in eight plays. Josh Sagrera scored from the 15-yard line that made it 25-8
The game got interesting on a bad snap, and Kaplan recovered the ball on the VC 18-yard line with eight minutes to play in the game.
Two plays after the fumble, White scored his second touchdown. White was stuffed, however, on the two-point play by VC’s Alec Broussard.
The Pirates scored a late touchdown on a Nathan Sistrunk one-yard run. Sistrunk had 13 carries for 85 yards in the game. White led KHS with 104 yards on 18 carries.
With VC leading 25-20 and facing fourth down with four seconds left in the game, Maxile took the handoff and ran 40 yards backward towards his end zone for a safety as time expired.
Maxile lost 40 yards rushing on the play but still manage to finish with 52 yards on 14 carries.
Andre LeBlanc had seven carries for 36 yards.
VC quarterback Drew Lege completed 14 out of 21 passes for 189 yards.
Colin Broussard had two catches for 68 yards, while Alums had three for 38 yards.
