Maurice Police wearing body cameras

MAURICE — Whether it is during a traffic stop or responding to other calls, Village of Maurice Chief of Police Guy Nerren will be able to view interactions between his officers and the public.
That is because when police officers interact with citizens in the Village of Maurice, there will be a video record.
Chief of Police Guy Nerren said that he has purchased body cameras for his officers. The total cost for the five cameras is $3,400.

Gueydan Man Killed in Head-On Crash in Jefferson Davis Parish

ELTON – On July 31, shortly before 2:30 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash on LA 26 about four-and-a-half miles south of US Hwy 190.
The crash claimed the life of 27-year-old John Russell Venissat V of Gueydan.
The initial investigation revealed that Venissat was traveling south on LA 26 in a 2000 Toyota Corolla. For unknown reasons, Venissat crossed the centerline and struck a southbound 2010 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by 66-year-old Joanette L. Klumpp of Kinder.

Louisiana’s New child seat belt laws go into effect on Aug. 1

Parents and caregivers of children need to inform themselves and prepare for a new Louisiana child safety seat law that goes into effect on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2019, the executive director of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission said.
The new law keeps children in more protected restraint systems and safer positions until they are older, LHSC Executive Director Lisa Freeman said.

Abbeville man arrested for attempted murder

​On July 28, at approximately 4:50 a.m., patrol officers of the Abbeville Police Department responded to a call from an address on East Lafayette Street.
The complainant stated that his son had been stabbed.
An investigation has determined that during an altercation, the suspect, identified as Elijah Wilson, 22, of Abbeville, stabbed the victim numerous times with a knife. The 24-year-old victim was treated at a local hospital and released. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.
